Why Cinemas don’t show Zambian Films

When a Zambian made movie premieres, that is most likely the only opportunity that people have to see it because afterwards, if it’s not uploaded to YouTube, then you most likely won’t find it anywhere else, depriving locals the opportunity to appreciate content made by their own people. According to Levy Cinemas, which is currently the go to cinema for majority of local movie premieres, demand is very low because “we haven’t had a penetration for Zambian content in cinemas, a lot of people don’t really know to say, there’s local content” according to Kinosi Tembo who works at the cinema. She says considering that they have to buy the movies they show, buying Zambian films risks the business running at a loss because only one out of ten people ask for them. According to Ms. Tembo, some people don’t know that such films are there and at the same time, some film makers don’t know that they can take their content to the Cinema. Additionally, movies aren’t promoted well enoug...
